Arjun Kapoor in his upcoming film Half Girlfriend. He plays a Bihari who is fluent in Hindi. Unlike real life, in the Shraddha Kapoor co-starrer he cannot communicate in English and falls prey to inferiority complex. In order to play the role hands on, the actor apparently practiced to speak pure Hindi with the Bihari twang.
Just like Arjun, there are many other Bollywood actors who undertake Hindi lessons to be able to deliver dialogues fluently on screen. For the same, their go-to man is Vidur Chaturvedi. The author of Bhasha Aur Uchcharan, has an institute in Mumbai where he imparts knowledge on acting and diction to his pupils.
Apart from Katrina, Vidur has also trained Ranbir Kapoor in getting his language and diction right and has trained the who’s who of Bollywood. But how does Vidur do it? “The process and the period of training differes from person to person. There are three kinds of categories that come to me for training,” mentions the ace trainer.
He elaborates, “In the first category falls my students like Elli Avram, Claudia Ciesla etc who are unaware of the Hindi alphabets. I ask them to learn the letters elsewhere and come prepared. Once they are thorough with the “Ka, Kha, Ga” I teach them to speak. With such a process I trained Elli for a month and she was good to go.”
Sharing an example of those who come with bound script, he says, “Yami Gautam came to me for Kaabil. She had a script and her dialogues were ready. I helped her to say the lines with proper diction and pronunciation. Considering Yami hails from Himachal she didn’t take much time and her session lasted for just 15 days.”
