After waiting for along time past weekend, we witnessed Sridevi making a long-overdue comeback in her latest film, Mom. While her performance has been garnering rave reviews (read our review of the movie here), the actress is struggling to switch to celebratory mode. Reason? The absence of her co-stars, Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali.

For the uninitiated, Adnan plays Sridevi’s husband in the movie, and Sajal bagged the role of their daughter.

The actors, sadly, couldn’t join Sridevi on the promotional tour owing to the ban on Pakistani actors working in Bollywood. (Following the Uri attacks in 2016, the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) passed a resolution to ban Pakistani actors from the industry). This also led to the now-famous Fawad Khan controversy. As it was with movies like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Raees, the movie, Mom, too, was shot before the resolution. As a result, both the actors couldn’t partake in the promotional activities.

In a recent promotional video, the actress, wearing a Sabyasachi sari with Indian-wedding-appropriate jewellery and with her hair in a messy updo, shared her disappointment. Visibly dejected and teary eyed, the actress thanked her co-stars for their work, appreciating their talent, until she was too choked with emotion to continue. It’s a rare display of vulnerability for a Bollywood actress, and one that made a very emphatic point about diversity.
