Beautiful bollywood actress Vidya Balan has been known for pioneering a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine. She had her first acting role in Hum Paanch in 1995. She performed very well in her movies and praised by her fans.
Apart from movies Vidya promotes humanitarian causes and supports the empowerment of women. She initially drew criticism for her fluctuating weight and “questionable” dress sense, but was later credited in the media for “not morphing herself to fit into any conventional slot”.
Recently, she joins hands with NGO to increase awareness on child sexual abuse. She has taken it upon herself to take forward the cause she addressed with Kahaani 2 where she played a survivor of sexual assault. She is the ambassador of Arpan, a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation that works in tandem with schools and communities to increase awareness on sexual assault.
She said, “My message to everyone is, don’t think that child sexual abuse is something that happens to others’ children. The unfortunate truth is that it could happen to your child, or it could be happening to your child.”
“We need to acknowledge when we see the signs. We need to educate our children so that when they experience an unsafe situation, they are empowered enough to get away and seek help from a trusted adult.” She told that the Kathua rape case has been a rude eye-opener for the society. “Given the current scenario in our country, it is critical that we step up and work towards preventing this social evil now more than ever,” she added.
Vidya has committed to produce and star in a biopic of Indira Gandhi, based on Sagarika Ghose’s biography Indira – India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister.
